THE SCHOOLAFTERINTELLIGENCE

Observations fromthe elevation practice

Essay(03 — 26)

The modern educational institution was designed for a world where knowledge was scarce and access had to be rationed. Artificial intelligence quietly removes that scarcity — and with it, the institution's oldest reason to exist.

The end of rationed knowledge

For two centuries the school held a near-monopoly on structured information. You went there because the knowledge lived there. That monopoly is over. A student can now reach an explanation, a tutor, and a working draft in the time it takes to ask.

When the information is everywhere, the building that used to store it has to answer a harder question: what, exactly, are people still coming here for?

What survives is judgment

What a model cannot hand over is judgment, taste, and the trust of being in a room with people who are also trying. The value moves from transmitting knowledge to forming the person who decides what to do with it.

Institutions that understand this stop competing with the model and start doing what it can't: mentorship, standards, belonging, and proof of who someone became.

The institution becomes an experience

This is also a presence problem. An institution that still presents itself as an information depot — a catalogue of courses, a wall of requirements — is advertising the exact thing intelligence just made free.

The schools that hold their place will read as living experiences: a clear point of view, a visible culture, and an admissions surface that shows who you become, not just what you study. The disruption is not that AI replaces the school. It is that AI removes everything the school was hiding behind.
